How to Adjust Lion’s Recent Items Menu List

April 17th, 2012
Did you know there’s a way to quickly access apps, files and servers you’ve recently used? Under the Apple menu, there’s an option called Recent Items, and when you select it, you’ll see a pop-up list of apps, files, and servers you’ve used recently.

Recent Items is a great way to quickly open what you want. (Some apps have a similar feature called Open Recent, which is often found in the app’s File menu.) The list of Recent Items changes over time, and to make the Recent Items list more useful, you can set the number of apps, files, and servers that appear on the list. Here’s how to customize the setting in Lion.

Step 1: System Preferences

Click on the Apple menu and select System Preferences. Find the General icon; it’s the first one listed, under the Personal heading. Click on General, and a window with four sections will appear.

Step 2: Number of recent items

In the third section of the General system preferences, you’ll see a heading that reads, “Number of recent items” and a set of pop-up menus. This is where you can adjust the number of items for each section of the Recent Items list.

You can select a number that appears in each pop-up menu: 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, or 50. Or you can select None if you don’t want any items to appear—you can’t turn off Recent Items, so the closest thing you can do to turning it off is to set each section to None. When you’re done making adjustments, close the window.

(The check box setting for “Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps” has nothing to do with the Recent Items menu. When you check the box, apps will reopen any files that were open when you quit an app the last time you used it.)

Step 3: The Recent Items menu

The Recent Items menu will keep up to the number of items you just designated. As time goes on, newer items replace older items. You can clear the Recent Items menu at any time by selecting Clear Menu at the bottom of the Recent Items list.

How To: Check Your Computer’s Log In Times

April 10th, 2012

Checking your computer’s  login times can be helpful. For example, if you’re wondering if someone—maybe a roommate or your child— has been using your computer without authorization, you can check to see if someone logged in and at what time it occurred. Or perhaps you just want to see how hard you’ve been pushing your Mac! h

To do this:

In the Finder, go to the “Go” menu

Click on “Applications”

Find the “Utilities” folder

Launch the application “Console”

You will see your activity on your computer. In the filter area (top right), enter “wake” to see login information. On the very left you will be able to see the time the computer was logged in to.  You can compare those times to the times you know you were on the computer.

Consumer Reports Says New iPad the Only “Excellent” Tablet

April 5th, 2012

Despite recording the highest temperature readings among a series of lab testers seeking to find if the new iPad was really running hotter than the previous model, or other similar tablets or notebooks, Consumer Reports, says it “didn’t find the temperatures to be cause for concern.”

The group has listed the new iPad as a “recommended” product, and describes it among 9-12 inch tablets as the only one achieving an “excellent” rating, saying the “high-resolution screen of the new iPad establishes a new benchmark in excellence, providing the best rendering of detail and color accuracy we’ve ever seen on a tablet display

“Performance on the new iPad ($500 to $830) was superb in virtually every other way as well,” the site states. “The 5-megapixel camera took very good photos. Verizon’s 4G network yielded very fast, dependable connectivity to a 4G-compatible version of the iPad in our informal tests. And despite the energy-intensive display and graphics, the iPad still has longer battery life than all other tablets.”

Highlighting the “standout performance of the new iPad’s screen,” the site stated, “we have recalibrated our standard of excellence for tablet screens. The iPad alone now receives an excellent overall score for display quality.

“A number of current models, including the iPad 2 (which remains on sale and is a fine performer), that received excellent scores under the past standard will now be adjusted to receive very good scores overall. Likewise, some models that received good scores may also be adjusted downward, and some overall scores have changed slightly.”

More Businesses Switching To Macs

March 22nd, 2012

power-mac-for-businessWhile many still think of Macs as the toys of designers and artists, the iconic Apple computer is more and more often finding a home in the enterprise world, performing essential business functions. Big companies and small are using Macs not only to design marketing materials but also to manage critical business tasks.

Apple will sell an estimated $19 billion in Macs and iPads to enterprises in 2012, a 58% jump over the year before, according to a research analyst.

And in 2013, corporations will spend $28 billion on Apple computers and tablets, said an analyst with Forrester Research. Apple’s resurgence among business users was profiled in a report by Forrester entitled “Apple Infiltrates The Enterprise.”

Although Apple’s share of the enterprise market is still small compared to rivals like Microsoft and Windows computer and tablet manufacturers, Apple’s uptick is nevertheless impressive.

The Forrester study indicates around half of all large companies with 1,000 employees or more are buying Macs, while more than a fifth of all “information workers” are now using at least one Apple product to do their work.

It also noted that companies buying Macs plan to increase their purchases by 52 percent this year. The study was based on interviews with 3,300 Information Technology decision makers and an additional 10,000 workers across 17 countries.

Forrester charted dynamic growth for Macs among enterprise users, noting that the percentage of companies issuing Macs to their workers has grown from 30 percent in 2009 to 37 percent in 2010 and 46 percent over the last year.

The research also indicates that Apple devices in general are most popular among workers with a senior position, higher wages and among younger workers.

As cutting-edge companies such as Google, where approximately less than 20 percent of the company still uses Microsoft Windows, switch to Macs, and even develop technology for the Macs, it’s definitely becoming a Mac, Mac business world.
